Grand Forks Public Friends announces "Arts in the Library" as Friends Focus for 2019

The Grand Forks Public Friends are kicking off 2019 by rolling out a plan to bring more color, crafting and creativity to the patrons of the library. The organization has chosen "Arts in the Library" as its annual Friends Focus, pledging at least $1,500 to support initiatives that showcase local artists and inspire the inner creator in everyone.

A portion of the initial focus funding will be used for an art installation hanging system upstairs, which will feature the work of local artists on a rotating basis.

Other plans for the Arts in the Library focus include opening night receptions to unveil new local art; a series of free art classes comprising painting, mixed media, flower arrangement, "bad art" and more; theater ticket giveaways; and sponsorship of a teen spoken-word poetry group, which plans a library performance later this year. The Friends will also continue their support of the annual Six-Word Story contest.

"The Friends' Board is very excited about this year's focus. In fact, we've had too many ideas for promoting and enhancing the arts and cultural programs taking place in the library," said Friends President Debbie McLennan. "The proposed lineup of free classes offered, theater tickets provided and performances planned will provide a diverse range of experiences for those who might not otherwise have access or exposure to these activities."

Grand Forks Public Friends board members and volunteers will work with library staff throughout the year to organize these – and more – arts-related opportunities for all ages. The library will post the events on Facebook and its website as they are planned.

"We hope the Arts in the Library focus will help people realize that the public library is so much more than a place to check out books," McLennan said. "It is a place for the community to come together, engage with different insights and be encouraged to try something new."
